Were You Hurt in a Slip and Fall?

Find out whether the property owner may be responsible for your fall.

Slipping on a wet floor, tripping on broken stairs or falling in a poorly lit walkway isn’t always just an accident. A property owner may be responsible if they failed to keep the space reasonably safe. If you were hurt on someone else’s property, tell us what happened and get a free case review.

FAQs

FAQ Icon FAQ Icon
What should I do after a slip and fall?

Get medical care, even if the injury seems minor. Report the fall to the property owner or manager and ask that it be written down. Take photos of the hazard and the area, get contact details for any witnesses, and keep records of your medical visits and missed work.

Who is responsible for a slip and fall injury?

It depends on who owned, managed or maintained the property, and whether they knew or should have known about the hazard. That can be a store, a landlord, a property manager or another business. An attorney can look at who had control of the space.

How long do I have to file a slip and fall claim in California?

For most injury claims, the deadline is two years from the date of the fall. If the property belongs to a government entity, such as a city, county or school district, you may first need to file a claim with that entity within six months. Deadlines can change depending on your case, so contact an attorney as soon as you can.

What if I was partly at fault for my fall?

Being partly at fault doesn’t always end a claim. In California, your own share of fault can reduce what you recover, but it doesn’t automatically bar it. An attorney can explain how this applies to your situation.

How do fees work?

The attorneys we connect you with typically work on a contingency basis, so you pay no upfront fees. If there is no recovery, you generally owe no attorney fees, though case costs may apply. The exact terms are set out in your written agreement.
